Dear Nellie:
Talk about your rotten luck! Unfortunately, you may not have a leg to stand on -- unless you have arranged to extend the liability insurance on your home or tenants policy to include your cottage. It costs only a few extra dollars, but it could save you a bundle if your irate neighbour decides to go a step further and sue you.
You may already have separate insurance for your cottage. This likely covers the dwelling and/or its contents, but not your personal liability. It's cheaper and easier to simply extend the liability coverage from your homeowner's policy. But don't assume this will be done automatically; you must request it of your insurance provider.
Get the protection you need at your cottage, so you can spend a relaxing summer by the water -- instead of in hot water!
Note: Remember, policies vary, so when in doubt, consult your insurance representative.
